Device not connecting to the hub

What to check when a Z-Wave device will not pair, or paired once and now shows as unavailable.

Will not pair

  1. Is it powered? Mains devices need the circuit on; battery devices need fresh batteries.
  2. Was it paired to something before? Exclude it first — see Pairing Z-Wave devices.
  3. Too far away? Pair within a few metres of the hub, then move it.
  4. Still nothing? Factory-reset the device (how) and try once more.

Paired, but shows as unavailable

  1. Power. A switch with the circuit breaker off, or a plug that was unplugged, drops off the network. Restore power and give it a minute.
  2. Range. Devices at the edge of the home need a powered device between them and the hub to relay. See Optimizing Z-Wave network range.
  3. Interference. Moving the hub away from a router, microwave or large metal object often helps.
  4. Restart the hub (how). Devices rejoin on their own.
  5. Heal the network (Settings → Z-Wave → Heal) after moving the hub or several devices, and wait; it can take a while on larger homes.

Still not working

Note the device model, how far it is from the hub, and what the app shows, then contact support.
